Shopian shuts on sixth straight day to mourn civilian killings

Srinagar:

A complete shutdown is being observed on the sixth consecutive day today in south Kashmir’s Shopian district against the recent civilian killings.

All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remain closed in the district while public and private transport was off the roads. 

Two civilians - Javaid Ahmad Bhat s/o Abdul Rashid Bhat of Balpora Shopian and Suhail Javaid Lone s/o Javaid Ahmad Lone of Gawanpora - were killed on Saturday afternoon when army opened fire on protesters in Ganowpora.

Meanwhile, people continue to visit the residences of slain civilians to express sympathy and solidarity with their families.

An official said that contingents of forces were deployed at sensitive locations in the district to thwart any protests.

Mobile Internet service remained suspended in twin districts of Pulwama and Shopian on the sixth consecutive day.
