Bangladesh pays homage to 1971 Liberation War casualties

Dhaka:Bangladesh is paying tributes to the 1971 Liberation War soldiers as the country is celebrating the 47th Victory Day. According to The Daily Star, Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid homage to the soldiers, who lost their lives in the liberation movement of the country. The day is marked as a public holiday in Bangladesh. On Friday, Bangladesh's Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque thanked India for its tremendous support that was extended by its people and government during the country's war of independence in 1971. India and Bangladesh celebrate December 16 as Vijay Diwas every year to mark their military victory over Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, which led to the liberation of East Pakistan and the eventual reation of Bangladesh. Emphasising that India remains a good friend of Bangladesh, Haque said that both sides are working to further strengthen the friendly ties.
