Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs Government of India under its Horizon Series showcased ‘Gulab Gatha’ at the majestic Matrika Auditorium SMVDU auditorium, Katra. This exclusive showcasing of Gulab Gatha was supported by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra. On the occasion. Dr. Varun Kumar Tripathi Head, Department of Philosophy and Culture Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences SMVD University dwelt in detail about the life and contribution of Maharaja Gulab Singh in creation of the largest princely state of India i.e., Jammu & Kashmir.
Welcoming the august gathering, the Regional Director of ICCR Jammu & Kashmir Balwant Thakur informed that in its endeavour of reaching out to the far off places of the state, ICCR Jammu always tries to showcase highly educative and intellectually stimulating creative events aimed at the furtherance of its mandate. Showcasing of ‘Gulab Gatha’ in SMVDU should be seen as one of the rarest opportunity being offered by ICCR for the reason that students community hardly get to know about the local history and culture of the state as the same is not taught in schools out here. Responding to the huge response and thrust of the audiences Balwant Thakur assured to bring more and more National/International for the University where one can always find the captive pan-India audience under one roof.
The film ‘Gulab Gatha’- a production of Maharaja Gulab Singh Memorial Trust which Balwant Thakur himself conceptualised, scripted and designed is based on the life and struggle of Maharaja Gulab Singh.  The film ‘Gulab Gatha’ is about the journey of a soldier who achieves great success at everything he initiated. His unquestionable obligatory obedience towards Lahore Durbar, his unconditional sacrifice and his conception of a kingdom has been regarded and given value in this.  Gulab Singh was the founder of royal Dogra rule and first crowned Maharaja of the princely state of Jammu & Kashmir, the largest princely state in British India which was created after the defeat of the Lahore Darbar in the Anglo-Sikh war. The greatness of leaders is not just in their works but in the way they have been appreciated and personified in the eyes of the people. Napoleon was a military and political hero of France and Alexander has been applauded for his greatness for his conquest. Gulab Singh as an emperor held the same qualities of being a courageous warrior. He was a normal person with no lineage of royalty but he established himself as a King with the help of his bravery and continued to keep a hold on his empire because of his well-planned strategic and diplomatic intelligence.
The most noteworthy part of the film was the dynamic acting by the lacal artists who simply created a magic on screen with their highly professional performances. Sunil Kumar Palwal a meritorius pass out of FTII and popular TV/Film actor won the appreciation of all for portraying different shades of the life of Maharaja Gulab Singh. The prominent amongst others who gave remarkable performances included  Arvind Anand, Madan Rangeela, Janak Khajuria,  Anil Tickoo, Neeraj Kant, Subash Jamwal, Sumeet Sharma, Gaurav Jamwal, Rahul Sharma, Aftab Singh Chauhan, Meera Tapasvi, Aarushi Thakur Rana, and Gauri Thakur.
